The government is tightening rules on cooking gas subsidies. From October 1, 2026, Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory for booking subsidized domestic LPG refills. The initiative is designed to clean up database records, weeding out ghost accounts and commercial diversions of subsidized cylinders. Currently, about 89.9% of the 27.43 crore active LPG consumers in India have completed their biometric updates, leaving roughly 2.7 crore users in a race against time. For customers, failing to link their biometrics before the deadline means they will have to pay full market price for their cylinders, with subsidies withheld until verification is completed. While oil marketing companies have deployed delivery agents with mobile biometric scanners, rural areas still face operational hurdles due to poor internet connectivity.
